There is much interest in the origin of the spotted saddle horse. For those of you who don't know,I submit this article from the SSHBEA .

Spotted horses have been popular with horsemen since time immemorial.Prehistoric man scratched their likeness on the walls of caves and the American Indians, considered by some to be the world's greatest horsemen ,selected spotted ponies as their war mounts.

The Spotted Saddle Horse can trace its roots back to the Icelandic ponies that escaped from the Viking ships that crashed on our shorelines. These Icelandic ponies were often spotted, naturally gaited and possessed the strength and stamina necessary for war duty. At the end of the Revolutionary War,many imported gaited types of horses were left in the United States.

Selective breeding of these gaited horses resulted in the production of a smooth gaited horse that came to be known as the Spotted Saddle Horse. The horse performs a smooth easy 4 beat gait that is a true pleasure to ride.

Through the years, the Standardbred, mustang and other breeds have played a role in the development of the Spotted Saddle Horse. In more recent years, the Tennessee Walking Horse has been crossed with colorful grade horses to infuse its smooth gaits into the colorful Spotted Saddle Horse breed, thus doubling the genes needed to preserve the true glide-ride walk.It is no surprise that the Spotted Saddle Horse has become a modern favorite, suitable for any task.

The Spotted Saddle Horse Breeders and Exhibitors registry was established in 1985.The Spotted Saddle Horse possesses excellent refinement while maintaining structural soundness, muscular vigor, size, calmness, docile disposition, and durability.

Their average height is approximately 15.2 hands. They are distinctively separated from other light horse breeds by their natural easy gait and their coats of many colors. There is no limitation to their darker color of hide.

The spotted saddle horse can be single, double or triple registered.

A single registered horse is spotted registered only, and can be registered with both SSHBEA & NSSHA ,provided the horse is gaited and has a spot, and one registered spotted parent.

The double registry is for horses that are both spotted and Tennessee Walking bred.
These horses are usually in most demand for breeding or showring purposes
and tend to be more costly.
The registry requirements are that both parents must be registered TWHBEA
All horses in the TWHBEA must be bloodtyped.
The only benefit to having the walking papers is for breeding or show purposes.

The triple registry is for horses that are registered spotted, walking and racking.
Again, the only benefit to the racking papers is for breeding or showring purposes.
These horses must be bloodtyped also.

When shopping for a new horse, first determine how you plan to use the horse
then you will have a better idea of how it should be registered.
